As the year comes to an end, so comes the time to reminisce and plan for the next year to come. If you are someone like me, who goes into each new year with no specific plans or goals on how to better yourself, here is a list of ten vital steps you can take to take control of 2018 and make it your best, and most productive year:

1. Set goals for yourself.

Whether that be by day, week, or month, start planning ahead by setting personal goals. New Year resolutions can be difficult to uphold, so break it down into smaller goals. This way, you can actually stay on top of your resolution(s) and achieve even more.

2. Indulge in some self-care.

I cannot stress how important bodily, physical, and spiritual health and well-being is. This 2018, invest in some face masks, scented candles, good books, and anything else that can help you de-stress throughout the busy week. Fellas, this is for you too! Looking good means feeling good, so take some time off and enjoy the finer things in life, like bubble baths. 

3. Eliminate all toxicity from your life.

Toxic food, toxic content, toxic friends; we’re saying a loud BUH-BYE to all of the above in 2018, and speaking only positive vibes into existence. So that means getting rid of the junk food, cutting off any and all people that bring negativity into your life, and relieving yourself from all negative energy.

4. Make a savings plan and start budgeting.

No matter your age, it’s never too soon to start saving. Whether it be eating out less, or refraining from buying those new Jordan’s you’ve been eyeing, any small step is a step nevertheless towards financial stability. 

5. Challenge yourself by trying something new. 

2018 is the year to step out of your comfort zone. So try something new every once in a while! Maybe going vegan for a day, seeing an international film, or trying a new restaurant. Broaden your horizons, and maybe find a new favourite past time.

6. Do a major clean out.

Tackle your closet, your house, your work space, and your phone. It’s time to go through your things and re-evaluate what you can keep and what can go. It'll be time consuming, stressful, and frustrating no less, but having your physical and digital spaces free of clutter is one step closer towards having an uncluttered mind. 

7. Get some new music.

Like Frederick Delius said, “Music is an outburst of the soul.” A good playlist to meet your daily moods is essential for getting through the day, so load some new music onto your phone and get going!

8. Accept the things you cannot change, and learn to say no.

In 2018, it's time to realize that despite our best efforts, some things are beyond our control. So take a step back, and learn to accept defeat when necessary. Additionally, make the effort to say no in circumstances where you are used to saying yes. If you feel uncomfortable or pressured, you have the right to speak up!

9. Put yourself first.

2018 is the year to put yourself first, and unapologetically so. If you don’t want to answer those texts, don’t answer them! If you don’t want to go out to the club, you stay in and watch Netflix! It's time to be selfish and put your happiness before others. In doing so, your year will be better focused on self development, productivity, and maturity. 

10. Welcome the new year as a clean slate.

2017 had a number of unfortunate events, but it's time to turn over a new lead and wave those shitty moments goodbye. In accordance with the commencement of a new year, all stress, bad energy, unwanted opinions, and unnecessary drama are being left in 2017 where they belong.


The last twelve months have done nothing short of flown by, and it is most likely the next twelve will do the same. On that note, happy new year everyone, and be sure to follow these steps to ensure that you can make the most out of 2018!
