Remember when everyone thought Fashion Nova was a scam? No one really wanted to shop there even if every single IG model was promoting it. Soon after, a bunch of similar shops starting popping up, and now we have companies like Pretty Little Thing collaborating with superstars like Kourtney Kardashian. Fashion Nova just hit 9 million followers on Instagram so it's clear, these companies are doing something right. The prices are attractive and it's what the celebs seem to be rockin' but what's the real tea? Are these sketchy online clothing shops really worth your money?
Fortunately, well maybe unfortunately, I have a slight addiction to online shopping, and I've definitely shopped on a bunch of these sites. In fact, the only reason why I decided to come up with this article is because I had a massive fail on one site causing me to resort to my most commonly shopped on site. However, f you want to know which is which, you'll have to keep reading. That being said, I figured I would compile a list of the most commonly spoken about shady online stores and I'll be rating 7 of these online shops. I'll be basing their ratings off the following categories: shipping, quality, accuracy, and price, then I'll let you know if I'd ever shop there again.
Fashion Nova; home of the Nova babes and the only way to know for sure if you've made it as an Instagram model! For many months, people questioned the legitimacy of this site. What the hell was Fashion Nova and why did all the models look eerily similar to Kim K? What the eff? Could Fashion Nova really be the site to live out our thotty IG model dreams? Yes. It was true. Fashion Nova is actually one of my favourite websites on this list because everything is reasonably priced, sexy, and shipping to Canada takes a maximum of 10 days. Just for signing up, you get a 15% off discount but if you watch any beauty YouTubers, they more than likely have a discount code in their bio for 20%. Furthermore, every time they gain a million subscribers, they have a 30%-70% off sale. It's truly amazing. The only thing you need to watch out for is the sizing of outfits because a model on the site could be a size small yet she's got the craziest body proportions. I've ordered things on their site that are way too small and some that fit way too big so it's honestly hit or miss but the reviews help a lot!
Worth it? If you're on the quest to becoming IG famous, definitely!
Pretty Little Thing
Alright, alright, alright, let me just sip on some tea while I write this review of PLT. Let me start off by saying that their customer service is truly, honestly, A1. They're available via Facebook messenger and they're extremely helpful. However, with that being said, they are f*cking expensive and for no good reason! For the price you pay, the quality of the things you get are so not worth it. I ordered this dress but when it arrived, all the chains were broken and the dress honestly just looked really tacky. They recently partnered up with Kourtney Kardashian and I won't lie, the line looks dope. It's just way too overpriced for the quality they're providing. Their shit is cute though and the shipping is hella fast!
Worth it? Ehhh, if you've got the cash to spare and can't find the item elsewhere, I guess.
Ahh, Alie Express, THE go-to website for all your replicas and knockoffs. Alie Express sells just about anything, from wigs to phone cases to... Yeezys? I just can't guarantee you'll be getting the real deal is all. What's great about Alie is that the prices are super hella cheap, like I mean 6$ is considered expensive on the site. It's super important to note, however, that while shopping on the site, everything is sized in Asian sizing meaning it's about 1-2 times smaller than Canadian and US sizing. Additionally, since everything is shipped from China, I wouldn't recommend buying your birthday dress a week before your birthday; this is something you need to look into at least a month and a half in advance - it's even advised on the site. With that being said, this isn't necessarily my go-to spot for clothes I genuinely plan to wear out; this is more so for stupid little things you don't really need but want like phone cases, fidget spinners, cheap sunglasses, etc. I've heard the human hair here is bomb though but I don't know if I'll ever actually try it out.
Worth it? If you're willing to wait for your items, yessir!
High key, gone are the times when you had to make an offer on eBay because now people actually just use it to buy and sell things. Obviously, the bidding still takes place but you can pretty much find anything you want and just buy it on the spot. What's sick about eBay is that they have a lot of knock off merch so if you're looking for some Yeezus tour merch or some Summer Sixteen merch, you better believe that eBay's got it and for hella cheap. The only issue with eBay is that the quality of shit is extremely questionable but I mean, you get what you pay for. Additionally, most of the sellers come from China meaning you're most likely going to wait over a month to receive your stuff so if you're patient, go for it! eBay is also really good because if you don't receive your item, you can file a claim and eBay always sides with the customers so you won't get scammed out of anything. Similar to Alie Express, the clothing is usually in Asian sizing so size up but be careful! The images used on eBay are never actually from the seller, they're normally stolen from other sites like Fashion Nova and PLT but photoshopped.
Worth it? If you're desperate or really want some merch, sure.
Not only does Amazon have some dope ass, high quality clothes, but they've also got weaves and wigs girl! Yes, I definitely just said that; they've got some bomb ass motherf*cking wigs that you can style and lay for the Gods. That being said, if you don't have Amazon Prime, this is not the site for you. Amazon Prime is amazing because as a student you get a 6 months free trial, and as a regular schmegular person, you get a 30 day free trial, and this trial includes free 1 or 2 day shipping, items at reduced price, and coupons! Prime is honestly really affordable, you only need to pay it once a year, and you get access to Amazon's version of Netflix, Prime Video. However, if you don't think you'd use Amazon often, you're probably not going to want to sign up for Prime making the site sort of useless. Although the quality of the clothes is amazing and you have reviews from real people, you could probably find some of the same stuff for cheaper elsewhere. A lot of the items sold on Amazon, you could most definitely find on eBay or Alie Express for cheaper and the wait time is still the same without prime!
Worth it? With Amazon Prime, hell yea!
ASOS is dope. That's really the only way to put it. I would totally recommend it in a heart beat because it's not shady at all, the prices are great, and they've got so much variety. My only issue with ASOS is that everything sells out almost immediately! Since the prices are so great and the styles are so cute, things on the site don't last which can be really disappointing if you're a broke bitch like myself and only shop online when you know you've got some sort of money in the bank. Asides from that though, the shipping is great considering the company is based in the U.K., the quality of the items is amazing, and like I mentioned, the variety is great; they've got something for everyone. Of course, they've definitely got some things that are priced way too high on the site but it's low key out of their control since these items are normally sold from a third party company via the site.
Worth it? If you're okay with being different, foshizzle!
Hoe ma gawd, Etsy is so cute, affordable, and worth it! Etsy is dope because you're honestly just helping out and supporting self-employed businesses. You can find clothes, jewellery, phone cases, key chains, and so much more on the site and it's all hand made. So far, everything I've gotten from the site has proven to be extremely well done and most sellers have an insane amount of reviews including pictures! What's even better about Etsy is that everything on the site is automatically converted to Canadian prices meaning you don't have a heart attack once you hit the checkout button and see that everything you added to your cart was actually in US currency. Shipping really depends on Etsy but it can be expensive sometimes so you've got to be careful. You normally will need to shop around for a bit since most sellers will end up selling similar items yet have completely different shipping costs. This is also an excellent site for replica merch!
Worth it? If you're bad and boujee AND crafty, yasss!
