As 2017 comes to an end, here at CityinThree, we think of those who have had the biggest impact or the biggest year. Whether their year was good or bad, most people would think of Cardi B, SZA, Rihanna, Donald Trump, or Harvey Weinstein, to name a few. However, Canadians are not normally at the forefront of discussion even amongst the people living here.

Except, many Canadians have also had a huge year. Artists such as Nav, The Weeknd, Belly, and Drake have released charts worthy music; politicians such as Norm Kelly and Justin Trudeau have helped maintain Canada as a top country, and the list goes on. So, with that in mind, the staff at CityinThree took a vote to decide which Canadian was most deserving of the "Canadian of the Year" title and it came down to 21 year old musician, Alessia Cara.

Alessia Cara (née Caracciolo) was born in Brampton, Ontario to Italian parents. By the age of 13, she began posting song covers on YouTube which ultimately led to her success. Her debut single 'Here' gave listeners a different story of an artists' perspective of fame, as the song was described as something for "everyone who secretly hates parties". This song was played across radio stations all over America jumpstarting her newfound fame. Cara then went on to work with producers such as Zedd, and rappers such as Logic. In fact, her song with Logic, entitled "1800-273-8255", is up for a nomination at the 60th annual Grammy Awards for the "Song of the Year" title. In addition to this, Cara has also been nominated at the Grammy's for "Best New Artist".

With that being said, Alessia Cara has not only made a name for herself amongst Canadians, but all across America by rocking 2017 with grace and humility so it's only fair we award her with the Canadian of the Year title. In addition to being one badass artist, she's also a woman who uses her platform for good by bringing awareness to suicide preventionfeminismand self loveAll this to say that Ms. Cara is definitely someone to keep your eyes on for 2018; she's proven she's here to stay and with good intentions.

Keep rising to the top, girl.
