I am one brown girl in a sea of white faces. My nose stands out, my hair stands out, my language stands out. I am called exotic as though it’s a compliment. I am called names and I know it’s a threat.

I am told that I’m pretty for a brown girl. I am told that I’d be prettier if my skin were white. I am told to pose in photos to make my nose more angular not round. I am told to go back to where I came from, even though I was born here.

You take my clothes but not my people. You take my food but not my people. You take my land but not my people. Then you take my people in the most violent way and wonder why we are so angry.

I am one brown girl in a sea of white faces, and I will not longer be silent.
