Need a creative date idea to keep 2018 new and exciting? Bring them to an Art Battle! No, you don’t get to throw paint at each other, but you do get to see talented artists bring a painting to life in just 20 minutes! Art Battle is a live, competitive painting event usually held in Ottawa’s Arts Court Theatre. Last week it was hosted at the Vimy Brewing Company and I was floored by the talent in the room.
The Art Battle I got to go see was a little different. Peter Purdy (the event's host) ended the year with a doubles match: six groups of two, two painters per canvas and 30 minutes to create art out of a blank canvas and some colored goop. Ordinarily, twelve solo artists compete in three 20 minute rounds where the ultimate champion is decided.
Each artist is given the same paints, brushes, and tools. Once the timer starts, the battle is on! The competing artists are arranged in a circle in the middle of the room and with their eyes only on their painting. The spectators surround the artists in a slow tornado watching each painting come to life brush stroke by brush stroke. At the end of each round the artists retreat and the audience gets to vote for their favorite work. The artists with the most votes continue to the next round. At the end of the night, all of the art created is available for purchase through silent auction. Check out some of the local talent from the first round of December's event below.

Though each artist definitely held their own, there can be only one champion. December's Art Battle was won by Dan Martelock & Dom Laporte! Congratulatons!
The next battle is scheduled for January 23rd, 2018 at 7pm! It will be held at the Vimy Brewing Company at 1-145 Loretta Avenue North. Tickets are $20 general admission, $15 early bird, and $10 for students.
